Emilio Chapela East-West

East-West. 2005. Salt, steel and wire.

This is an installation piece that deals with the relationship between east and west in a geographical and cultural scope. It is an interactive intallation that invites the viewer to move the piece, in order to bring together, in a symbolic way, the east and west, recreating a single unified landscape. In this particular setting the installation made a comment on Mexico city's particular layout, where the west is the wealthy part and the east is a very poor and arid place. The piece was built and installed in the "Faro de Oriente", an arts and crafts school laid out in a very marginal neighborhood in the east part of the city.
